The Bulgarian prince Boris was baptized in 864. In 918, the synod of bishops elevated archbishopric to patriarchate. 927 Constantinople recognized 1020 Patriarchate abolished. Church regained autocephaly 1187. After conquest lands by Ottomans, ceased again. struggle for became a very important postulate national movement 19th century. 1872 exarchate unilaterally favored autocephaly. Only February 22, 1945, Patriarch confirmed Church. 1953 elected.
